“Shepherds on quad bikes”

Clarissa Dickson-Wright, convicted hare courser, played a blinder on Radio 4’s Saturday Live this morning. Describing an idyllic hunting scene, and demonstrating that hunting isn’t just about posh people, she mentioned the “shepherds on quad bikes” she saw as a girl.

Shepherds? On quad bikes?

Confused? Allow us to help. She means terriermen; the thugs on quad bikes whose job it is to dig out a fox when it’s gone to ground during a pursuit by hounds. They’ll send their terrier underground to fight with the fox and cause the fox to bolt from its earth whereupon the torment can continue. Nice chaps, as you can imagine.

Get real, Clarissa, and stop trying to mask your dreadful pastime with twee images from a shortbread tin.
