Juan, the child matador

Authorities in Bolivia have given their last minute approval to a bullfight of 11-year-old Juan Mauricio Copa despite protests of child protection and anti-bullfighting organisations.

Unlike in European bullfighting countries, where matadors must be 16 or older, there are no age restrictions in Bolivia or Mexico.

Earlier this year a Mexican child matador who had killed six bulls in one day was banned from bullrings in Portugal.

League campaigner Florian Leppla said: ”This boy is yet another victim of the bullfighting industry who is desperate for positive news. After a devastating year in Europe with lots of cancelled cruel fiestas and declining numbers of bullfights they are now targeting South America. It’s a desperate attempt to save their sport.”
