Countdown underway for ban on bullfighting

MPs in the Catalan Parliament start voting on a law to ban bullfighting in the Spanish region on Tuesday 15 December.

In July parliament received more than 180,000 petitions calling for a ban. The PROU (‘enough’) campaign launched the petition last year, easily surpassing the 50,000 limit required under Catalan law.

The vote will determine if and how the parliamentary process will continue. It is the first major decision in a series of votes and committee sessions before MPs eventually decide on a ban in 2010.

Florian Leppla, campaigner at the League said: ‘This is a great opportunity for MPs to honour the strong opposition against bullfighting in Catalonia. They could also lead the way for similar laws in other regions and ultimately Spain as a whole.’

The League calls on the Catalan MPs to vote in favour of a ban on bullfighting. Please support us by sending a message to politicians urging them to support a change in law so that bulls are save from killing in the name of sport.
