What is it with The Times and bullfighting?

The Times ran yet another piece last week which appeared to extol the virtues of this archaic bloodsport.

In less than three weeks time, sixteen year-old Jairo Miguel Sánchez Alonso will take on six bulls in one day in a ‘spectacle’ in his home town of Cáceres, as part of a charity contest. The Times reports that his mother will be ‘watching anxiously’.

It’s really quite remarkable that, in this day and age, a European country can not only permit such gratuitous animal cruelty for the purposes of entertainment, but for it to be carried out by children. We think the Spanish Government are in breach of Articles 3 and 6 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, to which they are a signatory.

Yes – well done on pointing out that The Times has adopted a clear editorial line strongly supporting bullfighting. What was particularly shocking, was the moderation of comments – very few critical comments were allowed, they were overwhelmingly positive. The newspaper never addresses the cruelty issue, but presents it all as fun.
