A “barbaric and evil pursuit”

We blogged yesterday on a briefing sent by the Countryside Alliance to Prospective Parliamentary Candidates around the country. A number of those candidates have been in touch with us, sharing our amusement at the lack of mention of hunting.

Jeremy Wilcock, a candidate in Hull East, copied us in on his reply to the Countryside Alliance. Here it is:

Thank you for sending me this.

Under no circumstances could I ever support repeal of the Act to end hunting with dogs. It was a barbaric and evil pursuit that has no place in a civilised society. I say this being country born and bred, having lived my early life in South Somerset and now living in East Yorkshire where the hunt has been prominent. I am very happy to encourage drag hunting and hound exercise, and I believe that the numbers taking part in this form of activity have actually increased since fox, stag and hare-killing have been outlawed.

I am not sure what you mean by country pursuits, but if you mean industrial-scale rearing and kiling of game birds, I cannot support it.

The rest of your agenda is laudable.

Take out the emphasis on hunting and I might be more sympathetic. Until then we will have to agree to disagree.

Kind regards
Jeremy Wilcock
Liberal Democrat PPC – East Hull

We really couldn’t have put it better ourselves, Jeremy!

It is great to see some Lib Dems starting to speak out against hunting.

I hope they can convince some of their nastier colleagues (Lembit Opik for example) that the Middle Way Group is just another front for the Countryside Alliance and their so called support from the veterinary community is actually an embarrassment to the RCVS.
