We spent yesterday in the southern Cumbrian seat of Westmorland and Lonsdale. We’d stayed the night before in Kendal, and were up bright and early to give us the best opportunity to catch candidates.
The most remarkable thing about the Westmorland and Lonsdale film is the way in which both the Liberal Democrat and the Conservative candidates avoid talking to the Fox Tour. In the case of the Conservatives, it even involves people removing magnetic signs from car doors, for reasons we don’t really understand.
In a sense these pro-hunting candidates are using a tactic usually employed by the hunters themselves. That is to not talk about the facts of their barbaric ‘sport’, but rather to focus on the pathetic – and utterly discredited – arguments about civil liberties, or pest control, or population management.
Today we are heading south. The constituency for Day 4 of the Fox Tour will be revealed later…
